It's been a while since I have updated last time.
It was the busiest time of the year for my work.
Now, it's little slower and I have some time to relax myself and spend on thinking random things.
I just watched the news of a 52-year old man who graduated from Columbia University while working on campus as a janitor.
His motto, "richness is not in the pocket, but in richness is in me," hit my heart. I loved this phrase and his accomplishment of getting his degree while working hard time.

Chino-Japan Relationship
I was so happy to hear the news of Tokyo governor decided to buy the Senkaku Islands from an owner (who is a Japanese citizen).
I am not here to criticize or make individual Chinese person.
But, what China is trying to do is invading the Japanese territory.
Since Japan is an island country, we need to protect our territory from China.
If not, I guess they will start claiming every single island in Japanese territories as their lands in the near future.
Senkaku Islands are Japanese islands for long time. China started claiming these islands are Chinese in 1970s after they found out there might be natural resources around these islands.
Before that, there was a Japanese factory and approximately 200 Japanese people have lived there when there was a factory.
Currently, there is none of the Japanese people living there, but it does not mean these islands are abandoned. These islands remain Japanese territories.
I hope UN will consider about recent China's attempt of invading Japanese territories as a threat to the peace in Asia.

Cherry Blossoms
Cherry blossoms are blooming in Tokyo right now.
It's a symbol of Japanese aesthetics.
And, now, I would like to talk about the relationship between Japan and the United States.
I have just seen the postal stamps sold in the post office in Japan in memorial of 100th anniversary of cherry blossoms gifted to the United States from Japan. Those are located near by Potomac River in Washington DC.
There has been lots of emotions going on between Japan and the United States recently because of US military bases in Okinawa.
Okinawa was once under the control of the United States until year 1972 after the WWII.
Still, 70% of the land is occupied by the US marines.
There has been some crimes such as the one where US soldiers raped the 12 year old girl in 1995.
People in Okinawa always need to endure the noise of all US jets flying just above their heads.
But, people in Okinawa also depend on the US military bases. Their economy will not be maintained if there are none of the military bases.
The relationships between Japan and the US after WWII is based on give and take.
Thus, if the US wants Japan to join the TPP, Japan needs to think about how the Japanese government can take responsibility of funding the farmers. Since Japanese farmers have less lands and less support from the government compared to the US.
It will not be easy to expand the land in Japan for farmers, but it will be better for the Japanese government to think about specialization of agricultural products etc.
Also, Japanese government needs to show what it is thinking to the outside world. So, the other countries will be ready for the Japanese government move. Without explanations, Japan will be the country of indecisiveness and lose its good reputation in the world.
Since I love both the countries of the US (where I was born) and Japan (where my family is from), I really want both countries to maintain good relationships.

スーパーマリオ
ニュース9でのインタビューを持って興味を持った人。
今の日本にも、こんな人いてくれたら良いなぁ、と。
多少厳しい政策でも勇気を持って実行してくれる人。
そういう意味で、賛否両論あっても、大阪市長の
橋下さんは、少々過激な政策も実行に移す所、
私は好きです。
マリオ・モンティ氏のコメントにあったように、厳しい政策でも
一部の人だけに不利になったり、有利になったりするものではなく
平等にする事が、実際には難しくても、大事と言う内容の話が
心に響きました。
またインタビューの際の謙虚かつ明確な英語の語り口、良かったです。
これからの彼の活躍を期待しつつ、日本でも参考にしながら、
取り入れられる所は取り入れていってほしいな、と思います。

外交問題
今朝、ニュースで見たコメント。
日本の首相は、一年の半分にあたる180日を海外での外交に使わないと、種々の外交問題は解決しないとの事。
今朝は、半分も海外に行くのは多すぎるんじゃないかと思ったのですが、このニュース見たら、もう少し海外各国の首脳とのコミュニケーションを密にした方が良いんでないか、と。

確かに、ここ10年以内に野田首相は7人目（確か）であり、1年毎にころころと首脳が変わる日本と言う国は一転二転して、話がまともに出来ない国になりつつあると思う。この外交での日本の立場の弱さは今に始まった訳じゃないし、野田首相は、正直言って何の責任もないかも知れない。
でも、今回のソウル滞在が短かったのは確かだ。
これからの日本に必要なもの。
きっと安定した政権。政権が安定していたほうが外交には有利だ。
こうころころ首相が変わられたんじゃ、一回会ったきりの人に腹を割って話なんか出来ないし。
日米関係なんかも悪化したままだし、韓国、ロシア、北朝鮮、中国、周りの国だけでも国レベルでの交流はまだまだ問題が山積している。
とりあえず、野田さんどうこう言わずに、安定した政権の下で着実に問題を解決していってもらいたいｌ。

Foreign Policy
I have heard the comments where one Japanese was saying.
What he said was Japanese prime minister needs to spend outside of Japan for 180 days in a year traveling around to negotiate with other countries' heads to make the foreign policy smooth.
I was quite surprised to hear that news this morning. But after I read the story (sorry this is in Japanese), he makes sense in his way. Japanese government is not good in dealing with foreign countries for sure.
Especially the relationships between Japan and the US government are getting worse and worse in last couple of years after the former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi resigned.

This might be because of the frequent changes of the prime ministers in the last 6 or 7 years. Myself is not able to count the prime ministers of Japan after year 2004. Koizumi, Abe, Fukuda, Aso, Hatoyama, Kan, and Noda (now).... Already 7 people!!! Quite a lot in less than a decade for sure.
Japanese prime ministers need to have some government officials who are reliable to handle things in the country and go outside for getting more of the foreign supports than now for sure. It will be hard to spend half year outside of the country in this unstable politics inside Japan. But, definitely, Japan is losing its appearance in outside countries.

ホームスクーリング
日本では、まだまだ馴染みのないホームスクーリングの言葉。
たまたま、昨日、友達とホームスクーリングが話題になったので、私の意見を一つ、勝手に書かせて頂きます。
アメリカでは、ホームスクーリングは珍しい事ではなく、中には小さい頃からずっとホームスクーリングでHarvardに入った生徒がいたとか。。。
ホームスクーリング、悪い事じゃないと思います。
私自身は、一人っ子だし、両親、共働きなので、オプションには無かったかな、と思っていますが、学校に馴染めない子とか、いじめにあったりする子とか、どうしても学校に行きたくないって思う子には、ホームスクーリングは、オプションとして許容されるべきだと思います。
ホームスクーリングのタイミングとしては、友達と意見が分かれたので、両者の意見を：
①小学生ぐらいの幼い時点
②高校生ぐらい（思春期以降）
①のメリット：
自分の意見を主張できないような幼い年齢の時に、社会のスタンダードを押しつけられない。
独創性、個性が尊重される。
①のデメリット：
社会性が身につかない可能性がある。
両親が共働きの場合、家庭教師等を雇う必要があり、費用がかさむ。
日本の義務教育期間である事から、学校に行かせない選択をするのが難しい。
②のメリット：
受験競争に否応なしに巻き込まれない。
いじめ等が深刻になる可能性が高い時期に学校に行かなくても良い。
義務教育外なので、本人の自由裁量で出来る。
②のデメリット：
競争が少ない（塾とか、模試受ける事で補える）。
文化祭や体育祭等のイベントの企画、参加が難しい。
ホームスクーリング、きっと賛否両論あると思いますが、学校に行くことにメリット、デメリットあると思うので、親や本人の自由でいろいろなオプションが残された世の中になる事に私は大いに賛成です。
ホームスクーリング、検討してみるのも良いかも知れないですね。（大阪の留年するとかしないとかの話題に紛れこませてみたらどうでしょうか？そもそも年齢の概念とか日本の方が厳しいし。いつから学校入れるとかも、子供の成長に合わせてあげても良いんでないかな、と個人的には思うので。）
