I believe it would be the best timing for homeschooling is when children have grown up maybe middle school or high school.
Myself has never disliked schools, but it would be nice for some children who cannot get adjusted to their own environment to have a choice of homeschooling.
Middle school or high school children are usually very sensitive in their feelings. It would be a good option for those children to have time on their own instead of competing against each other all the time to get good grades and get into the good schools or universities. By homeschooling, they might be able to figure out what they really want to study and what they really want to pursue as their careers once they turn into adulthood.
And the high school children will be able to choose either they go to the university or choose a different career path. If they decide to go to the university, they can study and prepare for SAT or ACT. If not, they will prepare for the different paths.
If the small children get homeschooling, it might be not easy to get socialized with the same age children in the future. Unless, they are in the big family with lots of cousins or brothers and sisters of about the same age. Myself is an only child and I have lived just with my parents. Thus, it was good for myself to go to the school and get along with the same age children (even though I still feel not too comfortable to get along with the same age people at my office. I rather hang out with people older than me or very young as my cousins, a.k.a. college or high school students).
The schools might not be the only social place, maybe churches or other youth groups, etc. might help the children to learn social skills. But, I believe the small children can learn more of social skills as they have more opportunities.
